It was gonna take him easily another 4 hours to complete all the procedures and come out. They weren’t ready to wait that long. Anyways his time had run out and he has no choice but vacate now. What difference is a few hours gonna make? They went in got all his stuff out; bags, clothes, pillows, flask, walking stick etc. His wife and daughter sat huddled on a bench outside the room tears rolling down their eyes probably wondering what they should/could have done to avoid the situation they were in. But I’m sure he knows that they tried their best.
Even if it’s only for a short while he’s probably happy that he gets to go home now. It’s been a month or so since he’s been staying out. He knows at best he’d get to spend a couple of hours at home to meet up with family and friends. After that it’s time to move on, on to the final leg of his long journey. To the other world!
May his soul rest in peace!

Great post ... touching and very apt ... waiting to read more of this kind!!
Oh! how they (the family) might be hoping wish this was just a bad dream and they would want to wake up as it had never happened. I know how painful dream it turned out to be for his loved ones. Now, even if they’d wait for his return from the ill-fated hospital no matter how many days, weeks, months or years they wait…he’s never going to come back again. He’s gone.
May his soul rest in peace!
